The new Festival of the Wind Image for 2007 was revealed at the Bijou Theatre in Esperance on August 10, along with an exhibition of Curtin University students concepts for the 2007 Festival Image.
Festival committee member, Lara McIntyre, briefed eight graphic design students from Curtin University in March on the Festival marine theme and design criteria.
The students created a variety of designs ranging from Esperance landmarks to marine icons. The Committee chose Hayli Michelle's design for its quirkiness, simplicity, clarity and colours.
Hayli's image emphasises the fantasy element of the 2007 Festival and highlights the giant marine puppets that will be showcased.
Profile: Hayli Michelle, Festival Image Designer
I am a Graphic Design student, who never really knew what it was that
I wanted to do with myself.... until now. I totally enjoy
working with the computer software and get excited when I discover new
things for myself. I can spend hours tinkering trying to get an idea
just right and feel satisfied with each completed job. My aim is
to be highly efficient in using the industry standard software.
Festival Image Rationale [extract]
When first thinking of what to design for the festival, I came up with the thought of having interaction between water and land creatures, and keeping it simple.
Esperance is a very active town, where many are involved in water sports, like diving and fishing. Originally, I put the fish with its head popping out of the water and then a person looking down at it in awe, enjoying each others company.
We then came up with the funkier fish looking down on the groovy bloke, using modern looks with the hairstyle and earrings. The little cluster of stars was used to resemble fireworks to suggest fun and liveliness at the Festival.
Official Festival of the Wind merchandise, depicting the 2007 Festival Image, will be available at the Esperance Aquarium, 53 The Esplanade, Esperance WA 6450.
Postcards are currently on sale, with teeshirts and calico bags to follow very shortly.
